Frantzen Paints Portraits Of Resilient Students For Faces Of Iowa State

Sydney Marshall, ISU Iowa artist Rose Frantzen paints ISU graudate student Derrick Kapayou as part of the Faces of Iowa State series. Commissioned by University Museums and the Office of the President, the portraits will hang in Parks Library as part of University Museums Art on Campus Collection at Iowa State University. Artist Rose Frantzen is most famous for her work, “Portrait of Maquoketa, a huge mural painted on 34 vertical panels that feature the beautiful landscape of Maquoketa on one side, and the faces of 180 residents of Maquoketa on the other. Over the past five years, on and off, she’s been painting portraits for the “Faces of Iowa State” collection. This year she added six students to the collection. The students were selected because they have shown resilience and positivity in the face of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Each student was painted wearing a mask, which Frantzen said gives this set of portraits a time element.

Pleasantville Girls Hope to Rise to Competition in Tough Conference

The Trojans will be returning four starters for next season, with only Breanna Benge graduating. Pleasantville will be looking to improve their offense for next season, as they averaged 41 points per game in 2020-21, which was sixth in the conference. Coach Jeff Cook tells KNIA Sports that his team needs to improve offensively in order to make a push towards the top of the conference.   “Well we got some work to do and the nice thing is that we have a good chunk of starters and players that played a lot coming back. We lost two seniors, but we have five or six kids that played a lot. The negative to that is that if you look down at the conference roster, a lot of them were juniors and sophomores. So, a lot of them have a lot of kids coming back. When we did the all-conference selections, the only team that had a lot of seniors was Des Moines Christian.”

The Mustangs struggled to get any consistency offensively throughout the game, never leading. Senior Andrew Mitchell led the way with 14 points, including one of PCM’s three three-pointers. Gaitlin Boell was second on the team in scoring, with 11 points. PCM had a hard time stopping Des Moines Christian’s Adam Witty, who finished with 20 total points. Coach Fred Lorensen tells KNIA Sports that despite the loss, he felt his team put forth their best effort.   “Well, I thought we played really hard and had a really tough team to play. I think they knew they would be in the game anyway.”
