More than 42,000 households served. Nearly 18 million pounds of food given away. Thirty-three mass drive-through events. More than 34,000 pantry visits.
Those are the numbers from the Food Bank of Delaware for March 16, 2020 through March 16 of this year.
These are unprecedented numbers. These are unprecedented times.
In a recent story, Delaware Online staff writer Amanda Parrish highlighted the great work of the food bank, which has been helped with numerous donations and a large number of volunteers.
In that story, spokeswoman Kim Turner explained that prior to the pandemic, there were about 121,000 food-insecure Delawareans. That number is now somewhere above 164,000. Food insecure is a nice way of saying people do not know where their next meal is coming from.
