Above is a quilt made with a Baubles and Beads pattern by Sandy Samp, co-owner of Sandy Dee’s Sewing-Quilt Shop in Hillman.
In recognition of the importance of independent quilt shops to local economies, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed Saturday Local Quilt Shop Day.
In Hillman, Sandy Dee’s Sewing-Quilt Shop has over 4,000 bolts of fabric for customers to choose from, said co-owner Kursten Senchuk. A bolt is 15 yards of fabric. She and her grandma, Sandy Samp, opened the shop 16 years ago.
Senchuk, 30, said quilting has been a great hobby for her and her grandma to do together.

January is the start of the year and for many people it is the start of something new. So why not try a new hobby? It is actually National Hobby Month and joining host Jason Carr to talk about it are Jason Hall from RiDetroit, Movie Reviewer Greg Russell, and AJ Williams, The Michigan Chronicle Managing Editor and the Blogger In Chief of SingleBlackChick.com.
First off, do you have a hobby? For Greg Russell, his hobby is collecting autographs and, as someone who interviews celebrities for a living, he has collected many over the years. In particular, he loves collecting Beatles memorabilia. Jason Hall’s obvious hobby is the e-bike, but what you might not know is that he collects sneakers. AJ loves to get in touch with her creative side and paints in her free time.

A new year, a fresh start – that’s what I’m focusing on these days. Who knows what 2021 has in store for us, but I was very happy to take down my 2020 calendars and replace them with brand new, start-from-scratch, chronological markers of 2021.
January can be a hard month to appreciate. The joy and excitement from the holidays is over, schoolwork starts up again, it’s usually cold and gray, and there are 31 long days to endure. That’s why January is the perfect choice for National Hobby Month (it’s also National Hot Tea Month, so start brewing). Whether you already have a hobby you enjoy or are looking for something to keep you busy during the long month of January, the library can assist you.
