Signing the deal in a virtual ceremony were DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) Executive Director Cecille Lorenzana-Romero, and Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso.
According to Puyat, the Manila Mega Field Hospital will be constructed at the 16,327-square meter area of the Burnham Green located at the western section of Rizal Park.
The mobile field hospital will augment the bed capacity of hospitals for moderate and severe cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) with its default capacity of 336 beds, plus the “capacity to expand should the need arise.”

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 21) The city government of Manila on Tuesday broke ground to start the construction of a 336-bed capacity COVID-19 field hospital at Luneta Park.
During the ceremony, Manila Mayor Francisco Isko Moreno Domagoso said this is a way to lessen incidents of deaths of coronavirus patients even before being admitted by hospitals that are fully occupied.
The ₱154-million facility will accommodate mild and moderate patients and is expected to be completed within two months, Moreno said in a statement. Its total capacity may still be expanded by 100 beds when needed, with some 150 medical frontliners monitoring patients in the field hospital, he added.

“The DOT is gratified and honored to be able to use its parks and public spaces in support of the national pandemic response,” Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said on Tuesday, April 20.
Puyat made the remarks during the groundbreaking of the temporary Mega Field Hospital facility, which will be erected at the Burnham Green of Rizal Park in Manila City.
The Board of Directors of the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC), an attached agency of the DOT, unanimously approved the proposal of Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso to build the temporary mobile hospital “in anticipation of a possible surge of COVID-19 cases.”
