Colombo (News 1st); The Navy-constructed Lankagama Nilwella Bridge was ceremonially declared open on 10
th April 2021. The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of the Governor of Southern Province, Dr. Willy Gamage and with the attendance of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne. The new bridge connects the villages of Lankagama and Nilwella of Neluwa in the Southern Province.
Going in line with the National Policy Framework – Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour by His Excellency the President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, initiatives were made to go ahead with this development project, fulfilling a long felt need of Lankagama and Nilwella residents as they faced hardships when crossing the Gin River through a risky and difficult means. COLOMBO (News 1st): Families who had been in possession of government lands without clear ownership started receiving grants under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Monday (Mar. 08) at the Presidential Secretariat, the President’s Media Division reported.
According to the President’s Media Division, the grant, awarded by the President, is considered a deed, indicating undisputed ownership of the specific land; the beneficiaries of this grant can obtain a bank loan placing them as collateral.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that he expects to issue 100,000 ownership grants before the end of this year.
President Rajapaksa presented grants to 19 people representing all provinces to symbolize the launch of the program on Monday (08).

The government’s objective is to ensure that every family owns a land with undisputed ownership as envisioned in the National Policy Framework “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour”. Under the provisions of the Land Development Ordinance and the State Land Ordinance, grants will be awarded to 20,000 persons based on legal criteria covering the entire island during the first phase of the program. Program prioritizes low-income families whose livelihood is cultivation. The government intends to empower and encourage them by providing with ownership rights to their lands in order to increase their level of income.

Villagers and business owners are concerned that a quarry expansion will have a devastating impact on their health and livelihoods.
Mick George has secured permission to expand Greetham Quarry to within 200 metres of village homes and community facilities.
It means quarrying can continue for a further 20 years.
