District level tourism training schools mooted Daily News (via HT Media Ltd.)
The Government plans to set up tourism training schools at district level as pledged in President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s National Policy Framework, “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour,” Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said.
He added that four new hotel schools will be established this year.
He was addressing a Progress Review Meeting of the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management recently.
The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management under the Ministry of Tourism is the only institution in the country that produces professionals in the Hospitality and Travel Industry fields. It has branches in Kandy, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Bandarawela, Koggala, Ratnapura, Pasikudah and Jaffna. The Government plans to establish hotel schools in other districts of the country.

Doha: Embassy of Sri Lanka in Doha marked the 73rd Independence Day of Sri Lanka on Thursday symbolically at the Chancery premises.
The National Day events commenced with the hoisting of national flag and the singing of national anthem of Sri Lanka followed by the observance of two minutes silence in remembrance and honour of all patriots who sacrificed their lives to preserve and protect the freedom, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the motherland.
Thereafter, multi-religious observances were conducted by the respected religious dignitaries representing the Buddhist, Hindu, Islam and Catholic faiths to bestow the blessings to the people of the country.
Under the guidance of the Foreign Minister, Dinesh Gunawardena, to give impetus to the National Policy Framework of the Government, by enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery to the public, the Foreign Ministry will open a Regional Consular Office in Kandy on Saturday, 06 February 2021 at 2.00 p.m.
The Regional Consular Office which is located at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Information Technology Center in Gatambe, Peradeniya, will be declared open by Minister Gunawardena in the presence of Foreign Secretary Admiral Professor Jayanath Colombage.
The opening of the Consular Office will allow the general public in the Central Province and adjacent areas to obtain a range of consular services, without having to travel to the Consular Affairs Division of the Foreign Ministry in Colombo.

+ January 17, 2021 DIGITAL LEARNING ASSISTANCE. Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Magtolis-Briones pointed out the combined effort of local government units (LGUs) and external partners in supporting DepEd to provide digital learning assistance this school year.
As of this writing, over 475 partner local government units (LGUs), as well as several non-government organizations (NGOs), and external partners partnered with School Division Offices (SDOs) to provide learning materials to learners, parents, and guardians, and teachers and personnel.
The Secretary also shared that the Department and partners have been distributing distance learning equipment for teachers since last year to ensure that distance learning would be possible amid the health and safety crisis.
