Graham fills a position vacated by the retirement of John McAneney in May. Brian Tingley also recently retired, leaving the department two firefighters shy of full strength. The department is in the process of reviewing civil service candidates for the open positions.
Graham joins two other 2021 hires Mike Robbins and Chad Hancock, who were North Hornell volunteer firefighters. We re getting on track for the fall. All the classes start back up, so the newbies will be going to paramedic school and some will be going to regular fire classes, said Brzozowski. We re trying to get our training back up. A lot of experience is going out the door with these retirements, but our new hires will catch on quick. They’re hard workers.

Resident treated at hospital for smoke inhalation
The Evening Tribune
One person was treated for smoke inhalation following a fire Thursday morning that destroyed a two-story house at 5 Stewart St. in the Village of Canisteo.
The fire was reported at about 10:25 a.m. by the home’s residents, according to Canisteo Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Chase.
Chase said Joel Shorts lived at the house with his brother, Mark Shorts.
It s believed the fire began on the back porch but spread rapidly, aided by strong winds.
“They were in the house. And when they discovered it, they left the back door open, and that wind just blew it right through the house before we got here,” Chase said. “The whole back of the house is gone and it went right through the front, right through the front windows. The front of the structure is still standing, but the whole back side of it is gone.”
