The cause of the fire is undetermined From News Reports CANISTEO The Canisteo Fire Department was called out to a structure fire early Monday afternoon on County Road 119. Local firefighters arrived to find a vacant structure that was completely involved, having already collapsed to the ground. The department, with support from neighboring firefighters, went to work suppressing the flames.  Mutual aid involved tankers were called in from Canisteo, South Hornell and North Hornell, as well as pumpers from Canisteo and South Hornell and an ambulance from Jasper. Three departments battle wind-driven fire at Canisteo residence; one hurt

Resident treated at hospital for smoke inhalation The Evening Tribune One person was treated for smoke inhalation following a fire Thursday morning that destroyed a two-story house at 5 Stewart St. in the Village of Canisteo. The fire was reported at about 10:25 a.m. by the home’s residents, according to Canisteo Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Chase. Chase said Joel Shorts lived at the house with his brother, Mark Shorts. It s believed the fire began on the back porch but spread rapidly, aided by strong winds. “They were in the house. And when they discovered it, they left the back door open, and that wind just blew it right through the house before we got here,” Chase said. “The whole back of the house is gone and it went right through the front, right through the front windows. The front of the structure is still standing, but the whole back side of it is gone.”

Fires on consecutive days collapsed a two-story house at 21 Eighth St. in the village of Canisteo The Evening Tribune Investigators are attempting to determine how a Saturday morning fire that damaged a home in Canisteo roared back to life some 16 hours later and collapsed the house at 21 Eighth St. in the village. No injuries were reported from either of the blazes, and their causes are undetermined, authorities said. A Canisteo fire official said the homeowner, Walter L. Wade, called the fire department at about 9:40 a.m. Saturday to report the fire. “The homeowner was home. He heard a funny noise in the back part of the house, popping noises, and walked out of the house to see what it was. He saw the back part of the house on fire and called it in,” said Jeff Chase, Canisteo assistant fire chief.
