Three VMI football players – junior wideout Jakob Herres, sophomore linebacker Stone Snyder and junior long snapper Robert Solderholm – were named to Stats Perform FCS All-America teams announced Monday afternoon.
Herres, named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year in both the coaches’ and media polls, led the Keydets in receiving during the season with 80 catches for 978 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 12.2 yards per grab and 122.2 yards per game, all of which led the Southern Conference.

Illinois names Tony Petersen offensive coordinator

Bret Bielema has made his first staff hire.
Tony Petersen will be Illinois’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Petersen has coached for more than 30 years, serving as an OC in the Big Ten, MAC, Conference USA, American and Sun Belt. He was previously the OC at Appalachian State, which had the 26th-best total offense and 7th-best rushing offense in 2020.
“After competing against Tony and his offensive style and game plan I have had tremendous respect for him as a coach,” Bielema said in a statement Monday night. “Throughout his career he has blended the roster and skill sets of the players to maximize the results. Lorenzo Taliaferro has died from a heart attack at the age of 28.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office in Williamsburg, Virginia confirmed his passing in a tweet. He died Wednesday night after attempts to offer medical help were unsuccessful.

“Earlier today, December 16, 2020, at approximately 3:07 pm Deputies were dispatched to the 100 Block of Windsor Lane for a call of someone needing medical attention,” the post read. “Medics also arrived and transported the patient to a local hospital where he later passed away.”
