Penrose incident: Man appears on multiple charges; can t be named

A man shot by police and accused of fleeing police, wounding, assault and burglary has appeared in court - but cannot be named due to a suppression order.
He appeared in the Auckland District Court today and was remanded in custody without plea until August 10.
The 36-year-old is facing three counts of aggravated wounding, aggravated assault, burglary, reckless driving and failing to stop.
A major police incident in the Auckland suburb of Penrose shut busy streets on Thursday after a man allegedly stole two cars and pointed a firearm at the head of members of the public.

A 36-year-old woman, who was located at the address, was taken into custody, Pascoe said. The woman was charged with aggravated assault and burglary in relation to the incident, and appeared in Auckland District Court on Friday. The stand-off unfolded on Thursday morning after a BMW X5 was stolen from the Youth Garage car dealership in Penrose. The man then crashed the car on Great South Rd, held a gun to the head of a member of the public and stole their car, police said. He ran over the person’s foot as he drove away, assistant commissioner Richard Chambers said.

Gunfire has been reported during a major police incident in Auckland and two people have been taken to hospital.
Two intersections on Great South Rd in Penrose have been closed - one at Great South Rd and Church St/South Eastern Highway and another at Great South Rd and Campbell Rd - due to a police investigation, Auckland Transport said.
