A Pound Virginia man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the death and abuse of his infant child in 2015, according to the Wise County Commonwealth’s Attorney.
A release from the office of Commonwealth’s Attorney states 49 year old Franklin Len Mullins was sentenced on Wednesday on charges of involuntary manslaughter, child abuse and neglect and unlawful wounding.
Mullins’ charges stem from the 2015 death of his five-month-old son, according to the release. The five-month-old was transported to a hospital in Johnson City, where he later died.
As of Wednesday, Mullins remains in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail at Duffield and will be transferred to the Virginia Department of Corrections.

SMYTH CO., Va. (WWBT) - A traffic stop by Virginia State Police resulted in two people wanted in connection to a double-shooting in Richmond being arrested.
Shortly before 9 a.m. on Friday, a trooper was using radar on Interstate 81 in Smyth County when it registered a 2005 Jeep Liberty going 88 mph in a 70 mph zone.
The trooper activated his emergency lights and siren for the traffic stop. The Jeep pulled over onto the should.
Clairborne and Austin were arrested on the Richmond warrants for two felony counts of attempted murder and two felony counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

SMYTH COUNTY, Va. – Two people wanted by Richmond Police are now in custody after a traffic stop over four hours away in Smyth County Friday morning.
At about 8:52 a.m., a Virginia State Trooper was operating radar on Interstate 81 in Smyth County when the radar registered a 2005 Jeep Liberty traveling 88 mph in a 70 mph zone. Virginia State Police said a traffic stop was initiated and the trooper discovered the driver of the car was Jamara Clairborne, 23, and one passenger in the car was James A. Austin, 22.
Based on the information before the court, I find that the defendant should not be transferred to a (federal) facility because the Government has failed to demonstrate that it is impractical for the required psychiatric or psychological evaluation to be performed while the defendant is detained locally, U.S. Magistrate Judge Pamela Meade Sargent wrote. Furthermore, the defense persuasively has argued that a transfer of the defendant to a BOP facility, at this time, would unnecessarily put at risk both his mental and physical health.
It s up to the government to identify the expert and ensure the exam takes place, the magistrate wrote.
