STEM camp welcomes 8-9th graders

STEM camp welcomes 8-9th graders SOSU A group of eighth-and-ninth-grade students participated in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Summer Academy last week at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education provided funding for Oklahoma students to attend the academy free through a grant awarded to Southeastern.             Through water rocket and balloon launching, environmental modeling, and more, the STEM Academy engaged students in exploring, experimenting, and problem-solving related to environmental, physical, and life sciences, as well as mathematics traversing the secondary spectrum.         Students also utilized a variety of technological and other tools to explore, experiment and communicate.  Also included was a data collection field trip.

An Owasso lawmaker is preparing to host an interim study later this year probing the feasibility of creating an 11-member Oklahoma-only Division 2 athletic conference. State Rep. Mark Vancuren, R-Owasso, said Oklahoma currently has 11 Division 2 universities and colleges competing in three different athletic conferences that now require the teams to travel up to 500 miles away, as far as Nebraska and south Texas. “Whenever I see that we’ve gotten schools that haven’t had winning records, and we’re competing against schools throughout the state, I don’t understand why we would want to drive or travel long distances and not be able to compete with those teams when we could do something right here in the state of Okla
