Attorney Says Lawsuit Alleging Grooming In Trigg Co Sheriff s Office Connected To Indictment

Credit Screenshot / WKMS   An attorney who filed a lawsuit alleging a Trigg County High School student was groomed and pressured to have sex with county law enforcement during an internship says the lawsuit is directly connected to an indictment of the former sheriff. The lawsuit, filed on Dec. 17 in the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky, states Layla Kunkle as a then 18-year-old high school student faced sexual advances and messages via various apps during her internship at the Trigg County Sheriff’s Office from multiple former deputies, a Cadiz Police Department officer, and former Sheriff Jason Barnes.

One evening “after this period of grooming” Barnes invited Kunkle to his home. When she arrived, the lawsuit stated, he offered her a mixed drink containing strawberry rum. The drink “caused her to become very intoxicated.” The lawsuit claims that once Kunkle was intoxicated, Barnes had sex with her in his living room. After the act, Kunkle passed out on Barnes’ couch. Later in the evening, Barnes allegedly asked Kunkle if she wanted to sleep in the bedroom. He “had to help her as she held onto the wall to be able to walk.” Kunkle passed out again in Barnes’ bed, the lawsuit stated. She woke up “as he got in bed and began having sex with her again before stopping.”

Trigg Magistrates Approve Purchase Of New Tasers

Trigg County magistrates approved the purchase of new equipment for the Trigg County Sheriff’s Office Monday afternoon during their virtual meeting. Judge-Executive Hollis Alexander said Sheriff Aaron Acree and Major Mike Sandbrink recently made the recommendation to purchase the new equipment.   Alexander said he is in communication with the company to try and get a lower rate since they will have to make two payments on the new equipment. Magistrates approved the current estimate for the new tasers. In other action, members re-approved a resolution originally passed in June. The original resolution featured a lower amount of money than the county will actually receive from the Regional Development Agency Assistance Program.
