Workshop Description: This course examines the history of Tulsa’s Greenwood District from it’s pre-statehood beginnings to its many renaissances, including the present day. Coined “Black Wall Street” by educator and historian Booker T. Washington, Greenwood was the most economically vibrant Black community in the United States for years, in spite of Oklahoma’s brutal segregation laws. Though that entrenched racial divide continues to exist, Black Wall Street is thriving once again.

Quraysh Ali Lansana Offers Opal s Greenwood Oasis

Aired on Tuesday, April 27th. We re pleased to welcome Quraysh Ali Lansana back to StudioTulsa; the writer, poet, educator, and Tulsa Artist Fellow joins us to discuss his newest book. That volume, Opal s Greenwood Oasis, is a children s book for which he is the co-author. Aimed at elementary-school readers, the book profiles one Opal Brown, who takes her very first on her own bike ride throughout her home neighborhood of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The year is 1921, and Tulsa s infamous race massacre has not yet occurred, and this community one of the most prosperous Black American neighborhoods of the early 20th century is lovingly, vividly, and carefully depicted. As was noted of this work by Trey Ellis, the award-winning film producer: A beautiful and poignant reminder of the industry, joy, and resilience of Black people in America.

2021 Tulsa Artist Fellowship Applications Now Open The George Kaiser Fellowship Foundation has opened up applications for their Tulsa Artist Fellowship once again to local artists with a vision. The winner of the 2021 fellowship is set to be announced in May, with the program starting in August. Local artists trying to fulfill their dreams have two weeks to get their applications in for the latest Tulsa Artist Fellowship. The deadline to get applications in is January 15, but the winner will be announced in May. The George Kaiser Fellowship Foundation’s website states they are looking for candidates who already have a vision of the piece they want to bring to life, but are struggling to maintain the resources to carry out their vision.
