MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) – A state grant will help Marinette Marine fulfill its contract with the U.S. Navy.
The $1 million grant, approved by WisDOT, will support a $2.6 million reconstruction of Ludington Street in Marinette that will provide better access to the shipbuilding facility.
Marinette Marine recently received a $795 million contract to build the first of up to 10 new frigates for the U.S. Navy. If all 10 frigates are built, the contract with the US Navy could be worth up to $5.6 billion.
“We are proud to be partners with Fincantieri and the city of Marinette in this tremendous project, which not only will create jobs and stimulate the local economy but will also show the world the type of high-quality and technologically advanced products that are made right here in Wisconsin,” Gov. Tony Evers said.
MANITOWOC - Gov. Tony Evers was on hand Thursday to praise completion of a giant crane manufactured in the city that will soon make a voyage through the Great Lakes and down the Atlantic Ocean to a coastal United States Navy station.
The project was made possible with the help of $3.75 million in grant money from the state Department of Transportation’s Harbor Assistance Program. Improvements allowed Konecranes and Broadwind Heavy Fabrications to assemble, test and transfer cranes that can lift 140-ton loads for the Navy. More such contracts are expected to come for the next decade, Broadwind CEO Eric Blashford said.
