[i] The installation of figurative or symbolic memorial objects on hallowed ground fulfills a goal articulated the following year by Army Superintendent of National Cemeteries Brevet Major Edmund Whitman: burial grounds were selected with an eye toward “favorable conditions for ornamentation, so that surviving comrades, loving friends, and grateful states, might be encouraged to expend liberally of their means for such purposes.”[ii] The placement of monuments (not to be confused with individual grave markers) began to arrive in the 1870s.

Battle Creek VA Medical expands COVID-19 vaccines to all veterans, caregivers, spouses © Provided by WWMT Grand Rapids/Lansing Battle Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center would start providing COVID-19 vaccinations to anyone who served in the military, their caregivers and spouses, starting April 10, 2021.  President Joe Biden signed the SAVE LIVES Act March 24, 2021, expanding the eligibility. “The Battle Creek VA Medical Center has been focused on vaccinating as many veterans as possible, and we are excited to multiply our efforts to thanks to the SAVE LIVES Act,” Michelle Martin, director of the Battle Creek VA Medical Center, said. “We will be doing a variety of walk-in and mobile clinics to make the vaccine easily accessible to those who qualify.”
