Colombo, Apr 4 (efe-epa).- Sri Lanka was celebrating the Easter Sunday amid tight security two years after serial bombings at three churches and as many luxury hotels during the festival killed 269 people, including 45 children, and injured over 400.
At 8.45 am on Sunday, loud bells rang out at the San Antonio shrine in the capital to mark the moment when the coordinated attacks on churches began, leaving behind a trail of blood in their wake.
However, the rest of the commemorative events for the tragedy will take place on the second anniversary of the event on Apr. 21, the day on which Easter was celebrated in 2021, the media director of the Archdiocese of Colombo, Jude Krishantha, told EFE.
A discussion is to be held to decide if an island-wide lockdown should be enforced after the new variant of the coronavirus was detected in Colombo and other parts of the country. The Sunday Times reported that the matter will be discussed tomorrow (Monday) when the National Operations Centre meets. No decision on a lockdown has been taken so far. The matter is due to be taken up tomorrow for discussion by the National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak, The Sunday Times quoted Police Spokesman and Deputy Inspector General Ajith Rohana as saying.
Deputy Director- General of Public Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said the Epidemiology Unit was studying the situation and would decide on the course of action which should be taken.

COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka Police on Saturday (Feb. 06) sternly advised the general public to be vigilant of crimes committed by those who visit businesses and residences, impersonating health and security authorities.
“The perpetrators would come to business places, residences of businessmen pretending as police officers or health officials. Therefore, take precautionary action to prevent such types of crimes,” Police Spokesperson, Deputy Inspector General Ajith Rohana advised the people.
Whilst emphasizing that people have the right to request an officer to produce their IDs, the Deputy Police Chief noted that all police officers have been instructed to produce their official IDs when performing duties, especially when in civil attire.
