LUDHIANA: Sunday’s accident in which three youths, including a woman, died after their car fell into Sidhwan Canal near South City from the gap in the fence was not a one-off case. Several lives have been lost due to gaps in the boundary around Sidhwan Canal.
After the accident, the traffic police placed two cemented boulders to fill the breach. The TOI took a round of the canal from South City to Lohara and found many such fatal spots. Most were identified near South City, Pakhowal Bridge and Lohara.
A road safety expert said action should be taken against public works department (PWD) officials and the project directors of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) who worked at the Southern Bypass. LUDHIANA: Soon, the e-challan model of Lucknow-Agra expressway may be replicated in Ludhiana also. Hi-tech equipment would be installed at different points of the national highway to keep a check on speeding vehicles.
The vehicles found speeding would be issued an e-challan. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), speeding was the major cause of road accident deaths in Ludhiana in 2019, which were even higher than the national average that year under the category.
As per the NCRB data, 365 deaths in 526 road accidents were reported in Ludhiana. Of these, 314 accidents were due to speeding, which resulted in 209 deaths. This means 57.26% of the total deaths in road accidents in the city were due to speeding and the figure is even higher than the national average of 55.2% under this category.

Ludhiana: Puja, a resident of Chawni Mohalla, died at DMCH on Thursday, six days after she attempted suicide. Her kin claimed to have recorded their statements with the police and handed over a copy of her suicide note. However, the police are yet to lodged an FIR.
In the suicide note, the woman has accused 12 persons, including police inspector Bittan Kumar, his councillor father Surinder Atwal and brother Sajan Atwal, for allegedly trying to grab her property. The woman had attempted suicide at her house on July 2 and her kin had lodged a complaint with commissioner of police Rakesh Agarwal on July 3, following which a probe was marked to additional deputy commissioner of police-1 Pragya Jain.
