An Athens woman was killed Tuesday morning after she exited a car that had stopped on the Athens Perimeter and was hit by a passing vehicle, according to Athens-Clarke police.
The fatal collision was reported at 11:49 a.m. on a northbound stretch of the bypass between the Lexington Road and Olympic Road exits, police Lt. Shaun Barnett said.
Police said Angelica Johnson, 32, of Athens died from injuries suffered after being struck by the vehicle.
Officers investigating the death are faced with a double mystery. The car that Johnson got out of left the scene as did the vehicle that hit her, according to the report.
An Athens woman has been identified by authorities as the driver of a car that hit and killed a University of Georgia student on March 21 as he walked along the Athens Perimeter.
Athens-Clarke County police officers secured warrants Wednesday charging Virkerria Lacole Steward, 28, of Rustwood Drive with first-degree vehicular homicide, hit and run involving death, false report of a crime and driving with a suspended license.
Steward has been in custody since the day of the fatality and is currently in the Clayton County Jail on unrelated charges.
Police said Steward was driving a Chevrolet Cruze when she hit Knox Davison Whiten, 21, of Toccoa, as he was walking in the same lane of travel as the car. The collision occurred on the northern part of the loop near Chase Street intersection.
