An Athens woman has been identified by authorities as the driver of a car that hit and killed a University of Georgia student on March 21 as he walked along the Athens Perimeter.
Athens-Clarke County police officers secured warrants Wednesday charging Virkerria Lacole Steward, 28, of Rustwood Drive with first-degree vehicular homicide, hit and run involving death, false report of a crime and driving with a suspended license.
Steward has been in custody since the day of the fatality and is currently in the Clayton County Jail on unrelated charges.
Police said Steward was driving a Chevrolet Cruze when she hit Knox Davison Whiten, 21, of Toccoa, as he was walking in the same lane of travel as the car. The collision occurred on the northern part of the loop near Chase Street intersection.
