Hawai’i Island Police have charged 35-year-old Thomas Bowers, of Puna, in connection with a burglary investigation from the Volcano Area.
After receiving tips from the public, Officers from both the Puna Community Police Section and the Area I Special Enforcement Unit located wanted suspect Thomas Bowers at a Volcano store. He was wanted in connection with a warrant of arrest for burglary in the first degree and criminal property damage in the first degree.
After conferring with prosecutors, Bowers was charged for both offenses. His bail was set at $20,000. He made his first court appearance on May 14, 2021 where he remains in custody at Hawai’i Community Correction Facility.
Daunte Wright’s family attorney said they have received threats and racist messages following the death of the 20-year-old.
“There are concerns as far as safety for the family that we’re addressing,” attorney Thomas Bowers said at a press conference.

Kimberly Potter during a traffic stop earlier this month. Potter, 48, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter a day after she resigned from the Brooklyn Center Police Department. The fatal shooting of Wright set off protests in the Minneapolis suburb.

Following the shooting death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, the protests in Minneapolis during the Derek Chauvin trial intensified, which now, according to reports, have brought on racist phone calls and even death threats to the family to the Wright family.
The Wright’s attorney, Thomas Bowers, stated, “There have been some threats to the family, which is disturbing.” Bowers also stated that he’s received racist emails and phone calls saying that they were happy that the 20-year-old was killed.
This comes after the release of the photo of Kim Potter, the former Brooklyn Center officer who resigned days after shooting and killing Wright. Potter is currently facing second degree murder charges in Wright’s death.
