Environmental Design workers move 96-inch Live Oak to Downtown Wellen

NORTH PORT – A live oak tree believed to be 100 years old was relocated to its new home near the banks of an 80-acre excavated lake in Wellen Park Tuesday, courtesy of workers from Houston, Texas-based Environmental Design, who started the custom moving process 18 months ago.  The 800-foot move will allow the tree, which has a diameter of 96 inches, to become a showpiece and provide immediate shade for people visiting the lake, which is being crafted as the heart of Downtown Wellen Town Center.  The $1 million tree relocation effort includes 26 trees in all.  The process involves pruning back roots to define a root ball for each tree.

North Port breaks ground on public safety building in Wellen Park

NORTH PORT – City officials and developer representatives marked the latest step in the transformation of the city of North Port and evolution of Wellen Park Wednesday, with a formal groundbreaking for a new $13-million, 24,300-square-foot City of North Port Public Safety Building on the southwest corner of Tamiami Trail and Preto Boulevard. Underscoring just how quickly the landscape of Sarasota County’s largest city is changing, online mapping services do not yet recognize the project’s address, 19955 Preto Blvd.  “I’m just so excited and grateful today to be here and celebrate this next phase within our city,” said North Port Mayor Jill Luke, who recalled following the progress of North Port and the area now known as Wellen Park two decades ago, when she lived in Manatee County.

Residents counter developer claims in Wellen Park contraction suit

NORTH PORT – Two of the founders of the West Villagers for Responsible Government have asked the court to allow them to intervene in Wellen Park’s suit to quash an attempt to contract the city of North Port and de-annex incorporated land west of the Myakka River. Attorney Luke C. Lirot filed a motion on Dec. 10 asking Circuit Judge Hunter W. Carroll to allow John Meisel and David Fernstrum to intervene in the lawsuit. Once granted that status, Meisel, the president of the group, and Fernstrum, the registered agent when the political action committee was first formed, will file a motion for summary judgment to dismiss the case filed by Wellen Park and its associates that is seeking to either block a proposed referendum on contraction or have the city of North Port consider the matter as part of a quasi-judicial process that would include the developers as part of the process.
