Normal life was hit in Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu as the torrential rains returned on Friday evening after a brief respite in the day.
As several parts of the metropolis remained waterlogged, schools will be closed on Saturday and people were asked to stay home. The University of Madras and Anna University announced cancellation of their semester exams.

Boxes kept at 4 Armed Reserve Units, including St. Thomas Mount and Pudupet
Commissioner of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal on Wednesday launched complaint/suggestion boxes at four places in the city to redress the grievances of women personnel.
A senior police officer said more than 2,000 women personnel were working in the Armed Reserve Units of the city police.
The boxes had been installed so that they could seek redressal of their grievances quickly or could pass along any suggestion to improve the working conditions of the police force.

On Sunday, when there was a full lockdown, Chennai Metro Rail had nearly 5,000 passengers using trains, with a majority of them travelling either to take a train or a flight.
According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), since there was no other mode of public transport available to connect to transport hubs like Chennai Central and Chennai airport, many who had to travel used the trains.
Chennai Central Metro Rail station had the maximum number of passengers nearly 850 followed by Egmore Metro Rail station, which was used by 500 passengers. Nearly 400 passengers travelled through the Chennai airport Metro Rail station.

While Chennai came under a total lockdown on Sunday, the city police did not allow the homeless to go without food. Many police officers gave food to those living on the pavements.
“Many of the urban homeless are dependent on people who donate food. As there was restricted public movement, City Police Commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal instructed us to provide food to those in need,” a senior police officer said.
In the St. Thomas Mount police limits, Deputy Commissioner K. Prabhakar distributed breakfast and masks to the homeless. “I have 16 law and order stations in my limits. I have asked all the stations to feed the needy in their limits,” he said.
