Single-shot COVID-19 vaccines: Would they accelerate the fight against coronavirus?

Dubai: The landscape of single-dose vaccines against COVID-19 just got more interesting. On Sunday, US health authorities approved the Janssen vaccine as a single-shot against COVID, with 78% efficacy. This is seen as a “game changer” in the global counter-coronavirus drive. Data from the clinical trials and massive vaccination rollouts lead some experts to make a case for single shots from Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, too. The latter two are messenger RNA vaccines currently being rolled out in North America, Europe and the Middle East as a double dose. With millions of doses per day being administered, there’s a decent amount of information for data scientists to crunch. Some experts argue this delayed or “fractional” dosing, could help the world achieve herd immunity sooner. Other scientists oppose the strategy. Here’s the lowdown on single-dose COVID shots:

Captain Sir Tom Moore: Tributes flood in from across south Essex

And Mr Moore touched the lives of many with his inspirational fundraising, including Pearl Naylor MBE. Before her passing, Pearl - the longest serving volunteer for Fair Havens - took on her very own garden marathon to raise money for the adult hospice. At the time, she said: When I saw Captain Tom doing his challenge at 100 years old, I thought to myself ‘I can do something, too.’ So we had the idea of 26 laps of my garden because the London Marathon – which raises hundreds of thousands of pounds for Havens Hospices – is 26 miles.” Spokesperson for Havens Hospices Amy Dearing, said: Captain Tom inspired so many people of all ages to take on their own fundraising challenge during the first wave of the pandemic.

Where are they now? Former Pulse News reporter Howard Schwartz shares his many battles

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of CTV Montreal (CFCF Channel 12), I wrote a nostalgic blog about the station with references to Magic Tom, Johnny Jellybean and others. One story I shared had to do with former reporter Howard Schwartz and how nice he was when I was sent to shadow him one day as a young journalism student. He emailed me last week and we ended up having a nice telephone conversation to catch up. Howard worked for the then Pulse News from 1982 to 1995. He left to pursue some work in communications in the pharmaceutical industry. In 1999 he suffered a severe head injury at a waterpark and was left with amnesia for seven years. He was married to an American at the time and they moved to Connecticut. Fortunately, he overcame this obstacle and regained most of his memory. He ended up getting remarried to someone from Montreal, stayed in Connecticut and first did some radio work and then became the communications manager for a Roman Catholic Missionary – quit
