While mask wearing has continued to go up throughout the pandemic, so has the chance of finding them littered on the ground.
At Bear River Recreation Area in Petoskey, hikers have been seeing them as well. That’s why three local businesses plan to take a day to help clean up the popular location.
Latitude 45 Bicycles and Fitness, Beards Brewery, and Bearcub Outfitters are asking the public to also pitch in. “It’s like a sense of duty really to give back to community and the town that gives so much to us,” said Steve Bartel, one of the organizers of the event. “Whether its the actual community members or just everything the area has to offer.”

Petoskey businesses are short staffed, and the summer season still has yet to arrive.
President of the Petoskey Chamber of Commerce Nikki Devitt said after all of the shutdowns and restrictions, it’s an important summer for the area. “What we’re seeing now is the concern is greater even then it was last summer because already job ads are staying open and they’re not being filled,” she said.
Devitt said well over half of Petoskey businesses including almost all of those in the hospitality industry are short staffed, including Beards Brewery who will have to close for the next 10 days. “Cases in the area are spiking pretty heavily and pretty out of control and we had some staff exposed at an after hours event so at that point we’re already so thin that it’s kind of our only option at this point,” said Ben Slocum, owner of Beards Brewery.

Pizza for a good cause!
The Petoskey Pizza Pizzazz fundraiser is happening at 10 area pizza places. For each pizza they sell on Monday, February 22, $1 will be donated to the Petoskey Education Foundation.
The donations are used to support scholarships for students and mini-grants for teachers at the Public Schools of Petoskey. Last year just more than $1,000 was raised in this promotion for the foundation.
“The pizza places in town are so generous with this promotion, so hopefully it’s a chance for the community to support them as well,” said foundation chairman Jim Kan said.
