Yamaguchi founded Always Dream to promote her passion of childhood literacy. In the beginning, she focused on book donations to a few Bay Area schools that serve underserved children. Since then it has grown to include 10 schools, 32 kindergarten classrooms, and 500 students in three states.
FRESH MEADOWS, Queens (WABC) An incident in which an Asian American mother says she was spit at while holding her baby and called the Chinese virus is being investigated as a possible hate crime.
The woman told police that the confrontation occurred Tuesday morning, sometime between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. in or near Kissena Corridor Park in Fresh Meadows.
The 25-year-old woman said a man spit in her direction three times before calling her the derogatory term.
At the Korean Community Services Center, not far from where this allegedly happened, they have felt the hate too often. I m not surprised, to be honest. We ve been hearing about a lot more of these incidents happening in broad daylight, the center s Linda Lee said.
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) Friday is the beginning of Lunar New Year, traditionally a time for festivities. While the pandemic has put a damper on many celebrations, San Francisco s Chinatown has found a way to mark the Year of the Ox while sending a strong message about a recent wave of attacks on Asian Americans.
Usually, the opening of a playground wouldn t warrant such a grand celebration but the Willy Woo Woo Wong Playground is a $14.5 million dollar, nearly 10-year long project which is symbolic of the challenges this neighborhood has endured in the past year. Hopefully it s more of a sign that Chinatown that has been battered by this pandemic is coming back. It s going to attract more people to work play eat in Chinatown, said Allan Low with the city s Recreation and Park Commission.
