South Heidelberg police look back on first year of expanded coverage

SOUTH HEIDELBERG TWP., Pa. – The South Heidelberg Township Police Department has now been patrolling the streets of Robesonia, Wernersville and Heidelberg Township for nearly a year – a long and difficult year. We ve been dealing with the COVID virus outbreak and dealing with that, said Chief Leon Grim, so there s definitely been a lot of challenges for a first-year police department, not only to absorb the extra coverage area, but as well deal with all these issues. The department brought on five new officers – three of them veteran officers. With the COVID situation, we had a couple incidents where the response time was critical, and if we wouldn t have had the 24/7 coverage, I think the situation would have ended badly, said David Randler, the chairman of Heidelberg Township s board of supervisors.

Berks County detectives investigate killing in South Heidelberg Township home

Authorities expect an autopsy that was planned for Monday afternoon will help them wrap up an investigation in the killing of a man in a South Heidelberg Township home Sunday night. No one has been arrested, but investigators have a fairly clear picture of what happened and they re waiting for a forensic pathologist to confirm it so they can proceed accordingly, Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams and South Heidelberg police Chief Leon Grim said about noon Monday. Once we determine more specifically the cause of death, which we hope to do as a result of the autopsy this evening, that will basically answer a few questions and we ll take whatever steps are necessary, Adams said.
