QUINCY The city is one step closer to buying the historical Adams Academy building and settling a lawsuit over its ownership thanks to a $9 million allocation of Community Preservation Act money.
Quincy is decades into a legal battle over the ownership of the Adams Academy building downtown and the revenue it generates. Recent moves to sell the 149-year-old school by the trustee of the Adams Temple and School Fund to benefit the private Woodward School for girls prompted Mayor Thomas Koch to take the building by eminent domain, settling the issue of ownership once and for all.
The Quincy Community Preservation Commission recently gave the OK for the city to spend $9 million on the Adams Academy building and the two parcels next door, as well as pay to settle in court. The mayor s administration did not provide a breakdown of exactly how much each of those things will cost, citing ongoing negotiations.
