Snow Emergency Effective in Clearing Washington Streets

Photo courtesy of Iowa DOT. A snow emergency issued by Washington Mayor Jaron Rosien greatly helped the city’s maintenance crew in clearing streets and alleys after Monday night’s storm. The snow emergency was effective from 10 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, and while there were still some vehicles parked on public roadways, Maintenance Superintendent JJ Bell says the proclamation made a big difference for the cleanup, “We actually came in last night at 6 o’clock and plowed until 11 o’clock give or take, and did the whole town. And then we decided to come back in at 4 [a.m.], didn’t get much sleep but it is what it is and we actually got done cleaning the streets probably from 4 a.m. to 9 o’clock this morning.”

Washington Police Chief Advises Not to Become Victim of Winter-Related Crimes

As we get closer to the brunt of winter, the Washington Police Department gives some advice to avoid being a victim of property theft. Police Chief Jim Lester says it may be appealing to start your vehicle a few minutes before heading out on the road, or leave it running while performing errands during cold weather conditions, but he says to be careful if your vehicle is parked out in the open, “Most all of those things are situational awareness, know what’s happening around you if you do decide to warm up your car. Have a spare set of keys so you’re able to lock that vehicle while it’s outside running and things like that. Make sure it’s secure, don’t leave valuables in unlocked vehicles.”

Washington Police Warns of Increased Traffic Enforcement this Holiday Season

The Washington Police Department urges residents to drive sober or get pulled over as they increase their traffic enforcement presence this holiday season. From now until January 1st, the police department along with other law enforcement agencies across the state are partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to remove impaired drivers from the roads and help save lives. Police Chief Jim Lester advises those attending holiday parties to plan ahead, “If you plan to go out and attend a party, plan to have a sober driver take you home. Either call a friend or have a designated driver determine before you go out that you got somebody in that role that’s taking that role seriously. They’re not going to be partaking in the alcohol and everyone can get home safely.”

Washington Police Promotes Community Camera Program this Holiday Season

As the COVID-19 pandemic has spurred more online holiday shopping and home deliveries, the Washington Police Department is encouraging residents and businesses to take part in their Community Camera Program. Police Chief Jim Lester says the program began last winter with about a dozen business or residential properties registering their security camera systems with the program. Lester says by having property owners’ systems registered with the police department, investigators can quickly identify nearby cameras that may have captured criminal activity. He says owners may be requested to allow law enforcement to view the camera footage in order to assist in an investigation, “You know a lot of times we’ll use business or residential systems to assist in our investigations and the owners may not even realize that their video system recorded a crime or the potential suspects. Knowing where we have these located throughout the city is important to us to help ultimately keep the co
