The Nigerian Navy on Monday launched a new Landing Ship Tank (LST) at Damen Shipyard, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
The construction of the new warship began about two years ago and when commissioned, will replace the first set of LSTs of the Nigerian Navy, NNS AMBE and NNS OFIOM, which have been decommissioned, naval authorities said.
A statement by the Nigerian Navy said, “The introduction of the LST to the Nigerian Navy inventory will bolster the force’s sealift capability. Specifically, it would enhance the transportation of troops, military hardware, vehicles in the conduct of maritime security operations launched from sea as well as supply of relief material during periods of national emergency.

The retired officer, who oversaw multiple important operations including the swift movement of naval assets after the Pulwama attack to keep the Pakistan Navy in check, relinquished office on superannuation on Monday.
In his retirement address, the Vice Admiral recounted his life in uniform and said that it is with a sense of great pride and fulfillment that he is passing the baton to a set of able hands and wished the Navy success and glory, no matter what the weather .

Pawar had assumed charge as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff on February 1, 2019, and was immediately tasked to undertake post-Pulwama attack operations. Strategic assets, such as nuclear submarines were deployed in the operation in such a manner that Pakistan Navy was pressurised to stay away from any misadventure in view of the Indian response in Balakot aerial strikes on a terrorist camp, Navy officials said.
