Hilliard music teacher recognized for hitting all the right notes as Academy Vibe instructor
Call him a working man who loves his job.
For the past six years, Phil Nagy, a teacher whose love for music began with his parents and grew while listening to the Canadian prog-rock group Rush, has worked to instill that same appreciation in each student in the Academy Vibe classes he instructs at the Hilliard City Schools Innovation Campus.
For that effort, the Yamaha Corp., a manufacturer of pianos and other musical instruments, has recognized Nagy as one of its “40 Under 40 for excellence in music education.
It was a whirlwind week for Audra Miller and a couple of her bandmates, flying out to Los Angeles and points west, then getting back just in time to do an hourlong live stream on their YouTube channel which recently gained its one millionth subscriber.
Miller, 19, is getting used to whirlwinds, seeing as how she s been at the center of one since she found herself the face of Erie s First to Eleven, which won the Tri-C High School Rock Off at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland in 2015 and 2016.
An earlier iteration of the band, then called M4, were ages 13 to 16, Miller being the 13-year-old, played local venues including Peek n Peak Resort, Splash Lagoon and block parties.

This weekend is the last chance you’ll have to see Transformer Station’s two current exhibitions, which have been extended through Jan. 31. “ONE: Unique Photo-Based Images” is a group exhibition featuring a mix of photography, sculpture and painting, and “Dave Jordano: (Human) Landscapes” features nocturnal photos of Cleveland city scenes. Tickets are free, but must be reserved in advance.
