The six suspects were due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on charges of extortion once charged while the two suspects aged 29 and 36 will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on rape charges once they have been charged.

POLICE came under attack when they noticed three suspicious-looking males standing at the corner at about 11.30 am in Philippi East .
“As the patrol vehicle approached them, one of the suspects produced a firearm and fired several gunshots at the vehicle. The police members returned fire at the suspect.
“The suspects fled the scene and in the process dropped the firearm. The members chased after the suspect, but they managed to evade arrest and are still at large,” said Police spokesperson FC van Wyk.
Van Wyk said that a 9mm pistol with one blank round was retrieved and handed in at the local police station as an exhibit.

Cape Town - The two suspects believed to have shot and fatally wounded Metro Police Officer Mzuvukile Mhlengi outside his home and taking his vehicle in Marikana, Philippi East, on Wednesday last week are set to appear in the Athlone Magistrateâs Court today.
Mhlengi, 49, was shot and killed outside his home in what police suspect to have been a botched robbery. Mhlengi is survived by his wife and teenage daughter.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the arrest in the case had been due to the joint efforts by some community members, who communicated with police to bring the suspected killers to book.

Two suspects have been arrested for allegedly killing off-duty metro police officer Mzuvukile Mhlengi who was shot dead outside his home in Philippi East, Cape Town, on Wednesday.
Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said tip-offs had resulted in two suspects, aged 39 and 49, being apprehended in Kraaifontein and Lower Crossroads, respectively. The vehicle of the deceased was also found in the possession of one of the suspects, he added.
The mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said the City of Cape Town was devastated by Mhlengi s murder.
