CAPE TOWN - Two men will appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Monday for the murder of a metro police officer in Philippi East.
Mzuvukile Mhlengi was gunned down on Wednesday while sitting in his vehicle outside his home. The suspects fled with his car.
The City of Cape Town has welcomed the swift arrest of the two suspects, saying they must now be speedily convicted.
The municipality s JP Smith said: “We are hoping that we will see speedy convictions of these individuals and hopefully any other person who are involved in this murder. The city asks anybody with information to please come forward and contact the emergency centre on 021 421 0770.”

Cape Town - The two suspects believed to have shot and fatally wounded Metro Police Officer Mzuvukile Mhlengi outside his home and taking his vehicle in Marikana, Philippi East, on Wednesday last week are set to appear in the Athlone Magistrateâs Court today.
Mhlengi, 49, was shot and killed outside his home in what police suspect to have been a botched robbery. Mhlengi is survived by his wife and teenage daughter.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the arrest in the case had been due to the joint efforts by some community members, who communicated with police to bring the suspected killers to book.

CAPE TOWN - Police on Sunday said tipoffs by community members led to the arrest of two alleged cop killers this week.
Metro police officer Mzuvukile Mhlengi was gunned down on Wednesday. The 49-year-old was based at the Metro Police Radio Control at N1 City in Goodwood.
He was off duty at the time and was shot while sitting in his vehicle outside his home in Philippi.

Two suspects have been arrested for allegedly killing off-duty metro police officer Mzuvukile Mhlengi who was shot dead outside his home in Philippi East, Cape Town, on Wednesday.
Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said tip-offs had resulted in two suspects, aged 39 and 49, being apprehended in Kraaifontein and Lower Crossroads, respectively. The vehicle of the deceased was also found in the possession of one of the suspects, he added.
The mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said the City of Cape Town was devastated by Mhlengi s murder.
