The Heartbeat of Iran: A Book Talk with Tara Kangarlou

202-785-1141 ext. 202 In western - and especially American - media, Iran is depicted as a monolith often conflated with nuclear weapons, proxy warfare, and strict theocracy. Even if the average person has more in depth knowledge, accurate depictions of daily life in the country are few and far between. In her new book The Heartbeat of Iran, award-winning journalist Tara Kangarlou takes a deep and nuanced dive into a cross section of Iranian society to interview everyday people and document their diverse and surprising stories. Tara Kangarlou will be joined in conversation by Alex Vatanka, director of the Iran program at the Middle East Institute.

Gaza An Uneven Killing Field

Gaza An Uneven Killing Field The New Nation Inter Press Service In most civil wars and military conflicts across the politically-volatile Middle East, including in Syria, Yemen and Palestine, the ongoing battles are being fought not on a level playing field but on an uneven killing field. And it is more so in the current fighting between Israelis and Palestinians, described as a Middle East carnage where children are among the civilians killed in airstrikes. The fighting is largely a battle of weapons: sophisticated US-supplied state-of-the-art fighter planes vs home-made rockets and mortars. The overwhelming Israeli firepower that continues to be unleashed on Palestinians -which has so far killed 192, including 58 children, in a weeklong confrontation - is perhaps reminiscent of the Algerian war of independence (1954-1962) when France, the colonial power, used its vastly superior military strength to strike back at the insurgents with brutal ferocity.

New book publishing concept combines T&F's Books Heritage with F1000's Open Research mode

E-Mail Taylor & Francis Group has launched the pilot of a new book publishing concept, Open Plus Books, that fuses the traditional print and Open Access books model with F1000 s Open Research publishing model. Open Plus Books will enable authors or book editors to publish a book open access first on the open research platform within just a few days of submission. Each chapter is a standalone piece, enabling chapters to be published as soon as they are accepted, and additional chapters to be added at any time. Chapters can be updated, revised, and amended individually by the author to reflect changes in research, knowledge, policy, legislation, or standards.
