Wall collapse in graveyard

Relatives of people buried in the old Dromin graveyard have expressed fears that remains may become exposed after a wall surrounding graves collapsed into a neighbouring field. And now a debate has begun about who owns the graveyard and how the problem will be resolved. Addressing the area council meeting on the issue, Director of Services Joe McGuinness said there were 20 burial grounds in charge of the council and Dromin was not one of them. We are not walking away from this, even from a public safety point of view, but we have reviewed this with our own legal agents, he stated. It is not local authority vested, it s not ours.

CCTV call for bottle banks to combat dumping

CCTV cameras are needed at bottle banks in Ardee to target those dumping beside them. Cllr Dolores Minogue has taken up the cause of the Ardee Litter Watch group and David Lambe, stating that it was hard on volunteers to be constantly under pressure with high levels of dumping. She told the area council meeting that it took up to five people an hour to remove the huge number of bottles dumped at the bank. It s unfair on the two houses beside it as well, she stated. We need cameras there to catch those dumping. There are warning signs, but they still do it.

Fears of tragedy on Ardee street

A local councillor had branded Ardee s pedestrian crossings out of date and he s concerned that someone will be killed using them before firm action is taken. Cllr Jim Tenanty says that the crossings are a nightmare after dark and new LED lights have only added to the problem. There have been a lot of close calls, he stated. He said a crossing at the council offices had been out of order for months. A funding application had been made in August and the council are still waiting for a response. Cllr Dolores Minogue said that crossings were not as safe as they appeared to be and she backed Cllr Tenanty s concerns.

Works to start on Dunleer footpaths

Funding has been secured by Louth CC to commence work on some of Dunleer s notorious footpaths. Provisional marking and scanning for utilities has taken place on 50m of footpath at St Brigid s Terrace on the Dundalk Road and 150m of pathway from Drumgoole s house to the fire station in the town. Residents have been crying out for repairs on both stretches for years. Finally, at last week s area council meeting, it was revealed that the council have secured the funds to do the work. The money is there to do the work and hopefully it can be done this month but might be held back with the ongoing restrictions, engineer Declan MacMahon stated.

€1 6m funding approved for new Dunleer fire station

Funding of €1.6m has been approved for a new fire station for Dunleer. It is hoped a site across the road from the present Barn Road facility can be acquired for the project. The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O Brien TD, announced the funding last week, with Dunleer one of six new stations approved. It has been listed to start in 2021. For Dunleer Fire Station Officer, John Molloy, it s very encouraging news, but they have been waiting on the new base for many years now. It is good news and now we d love to see it starting, he stated.
