Delaying second doses of COVID-19 vaccines has benefits, but longer-term results rely on robust immunity

Delaying second doses of COVID-19 vaccines has benefits, but longer-term results rely on robust immunity Delaying second doses of COVID-19 vaccines should reduce case numbers in the near term. But the longer-term case burden and the potential for evolution of viral escape from immunity will depend on the robustness of immune responses generated by natural infections and one or two vaccine doses, according to a Princeton University and McGill University study published March 9 in the journal Science. Several countries including the United Kingdom and Canada have stated that they will delay second doses of COVID-19 vaccines in response to supply shortages, but also in an attempt to rapidly increase the number of people immunized.

Updated Mar 10, 2021 | 12:50 IST The study concluded that one-dose strategies may reduce case numbers in the short term as more and more people are immunized rapidly. Most of these vaccine candidates are shots, administered with an injection, and are administered in two doses, around one month apart. Many researchers have been looking into the effects of spacing out vaccine doses, and have found some benefits that encourage the practice.

From lab to everyday life: Princeton accelerator fund supports promising innovations

Catherine Zandonella, Office of the Dean for Research March 5, 2021 9:21 a.m. Seven technologies that address some of society’s biggest challenges  from foolproof antibiotics to low-cost water purification  will receive support for research and development through Princeton’s Intellectual Property Accelerator Fund.  A technology for illuminating targets for new drugs against cancer and viruses is one of several selected to receive support from the Intellectual Property Accelerator Fund to help develop Princeton discoveries to the stage where they can have broader societal impact.
