St Lawrence County legislators pass resolution to use Ogdensburg school for opioid awareness event

OGDENSBURG — The St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators on Monday night unanimously voted to pass a resolution authorizing the chairman to sign a facilities rental agreement with the Ogdensburg Free Academy. The agreement seeks to use the school’s football field for the opioid overdose awareness community event scheduled to take place on Aug. 28. As part of the Emergency Preparedness Program, the St. Lawrence County Public Health Department — in conjunction with the St. Lawrence County Partners 4 Substance Use Prevention Task Force — plans to host the event to raise consciousness regarding the opioid epidemic in St. Lawrence County. According to the resolution, the event will include presentations on harm reduction and the “Good Samaritan Law,” as well as education on the use of Narcan, which can reverse narcotic overdoses in an emergency.

Albertina Wassenhove, owner of Midway Tavern and true lover of the blues, dies at 93

The blues became bluer Thursday. Albertina Wassenhove, whose Midway Tavern gave blues musicians and fans a place to call home for more than three decades, died Thursday night from a heart ailment. She was 93. “She was a kind of a quiet whirlwind of energy,” local musician Eugene “Jumpin’ Gene” Halton said. “Sometimes she would seem like a quiet person, but she was always at this place of positivity and joy.” Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hahn Funeral Home in Mishawaka and noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a service, at Hahn. Harvey Stauffer, the host of “Blues Revue” on WVPE-FM (88.1), said Wassenhove “worked so hard to keep the blues alive” and that musicians from around the world had been sending him condolences.
