Cleared to play by Major League Baseball late Wednesday morning, the star shortstop got to the ballpark about an hour before first pitch, took a few swings in the batting cage and then played for the first time in 10 days.

Jesse Agler’s preparation for calling Joe Musgrove’s history-making no-hitter for the San Diego Padres against the Texas Rangers on April 9 began all the way back in his childhood.
“My recollection is that by the time I was 6 or 7 years old, this is what I wanted to do, and I knew it,” Agler said in a recent interview for the Name Drop San Diego podcast. “It’s just something that grabbed me as a kid.”
Watching baseball growing up in south Florida, he paid serious attention to how broadcasters did their jobs and even practiced by having a baseball video game on his computer play against itself while he called the games. Later, he helped reestablish a student radio station at his high school to broadcast a number of different sports and called games into college and early in his professional career for the Florida Marlins, the Florida Panthers (an ice hockey team) and the University of Miami.

In January, we at FanGraphs put out a call for radio broadcast ratings. Over the past few days, we’ve released a compilation of those rankings, as well as selected commentary from each team’s responses. This is the last installment of that compilation.
As a refresher, our survey asked for scores in four areas. If you’d like a thorough explanation of them, you can read the introductory article, but I’ll also recap them briefly here. If you’d like to see the rest of our results, those can be found here and here.
The “Analysis” score covers the frequency and quality of a broadcast team’s discussion of baseball. This isn’t limited to statistical analysis, and many of the booths that scored best excelled at explaining technical details of playing. This score represents how much listeners feel they learn about baseball by listening.
