NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - Construction continues on the new Emeline Carpenter Elementary School in Nacogdoches.
While construction on the outside looks to be coming along nicely, the district said contractors are actually running behind schedule which is causing a few issues.
Deputy Superintendent Michael Martin said the contractor told them the completion date of the new school is needing to be pushed back due to both bad weather and the COVID-19 pandemic. The original completion date was scheduled to be in late July. It has now been moved to September 14.

On April 1, Nature in Your Yard, an online event sponsored by the Western Program and the Western Center for Social Impact and Innovation, offered students a discussion on how providing habitat for wildlife in our home landscapes can help us live in balance with nature.
The event was presented by
Donna McCollum, emeriti professor from the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability, and
Hays Cummins, emeriti professor of geography and individualized studies. Together, they guided students in attendance about how to landscape sustainably and what that means for supporting native species.
“Understanding the ecosystems around us and our place within them is something that humanity can do to practice mindfulness,” said McCollum.

Organization hopes to improve accessibility at Nacogdochesâ Old University Building WEBXTRA: Old University Building By Donna McCollum | April 5, 2021 at 12:48 PM CDT - Updated April 5 at 4:34 PM
NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - The Old University Building near Washington Square is a towering presence, both physically and historically.
It was the site of a Civil War Hospital at one time,â said Betty Shinn, president of the Federation of Womenâs Clubs.
A second story museum tells visitors all about it, if they can climb the steep, circular stairs.
âMany of us cannot go upstairs to the museum for health reasons,â Shinn said.
But just about everyone can ride an elevator and the proposed elevator addition will not bother the integrity of the historical value of the building at all. The actual elevator would be located in the annex. Also needed is a handicap accessible restroom to supplement the currently inadequate sole restroom on-site.
