Outgoing WWJ-AM reporter Vickie Thomas to become Detroit s next communications director Frank Witsil and Julie Hinds, Detroit Free Press © Vickie Thomas Vickie Thomas, city beat reporter for WWJ-AM (950) of Detroit. Vickie Thomas, the longtime radio journalist who retired from WWJ-AM (950) after 30 years, reported her own news Thursday. She is joining Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan s administration as communications director. She announced the move Thursday on-air, and the news quickly spread via social media.  Thursday is her final day at the all-news station, although she had said she plans to keep doing her weekly Black Business Minute segment for WWJ. It s unclear whether her new job will raise any conflicts in continuing in that role.

When Vickie Thomas announced last week that she was retiring from WWJ-AM (950) after 30 years, accolades began arriving from listeners, major players in politics and her competitors at Detroit s media outlets. The Wayne County Commission declared April 22 as Vickie Thomas Day. The commission’s chair, Alisha Bell, describe the city beat reporter as “a broadcasting legend whose work has touched so many lives through her work and commitment to the community.” Thursday is her final day at the all-news station (although she will continue to do her weekly Black Business Minute segment for WWJ). She ll be on the air starting around 7:30 a.m., and she plans to share details then on what comes next for her. 

Jimmy Fallon has fun with Michigan college s pot scholarship

Julie Hinds It was too good an opportunity to ignore. Jimmy Fallon riffed on the new cannabis chemistry scholarships at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie during Tuesday night s monologue on The Tonight Show. Two years ago, the college opened the country s first cannabis chemistry program. Now it s offering $1,200 scholarships in that field of study, thanks to Steadfast Labs, a cannabis testing lab in Hazel Park. The Tonight Show host couldn t resist hashing out a few jokes. After showing a clip of WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) anchor Dave LewAllen delivering the scholarship news, Fallon said, It s a two-year program that takes roughly 12 years to complete.

Fallon wasn t through yet. It s the only scholarship that comes with a year s supply of Flamin Hot Cheetos. Then Fallon finished by impersonating the supposed head of the cannabis department, Prof. William Nelson, saying, When you graduate, you move your braid to the left. The Free Press story on the scholarship included this statement on its purpose from a real, non-Willie Nelson professor, Dr. Steven Johnson, dean of the College of Science and the Environment at LSSU. Johnson said in a news release: By funding this scholarship, Steadfast Labs again demonstrates their commitment to supporting future chemists who will enter the workforce and provide public safety in the cannabis field.
