Letter: Time for the nine

The Joint Subcommittee on Reimagining Public safety has presented nine recommendations to the Davis City Council. These recommendations would start to move our law-enforcement system from a reactive and punitive system, to a true public-safety system that moves toward equity for everyone in our community. Our community is calling for nonviolent crimes to be handled by unarmed, public safety personnel trained to deal with service requests that do not require guns the vast majority of calls.
The deaths of black people at the hands of police throughout our nation and our own police data show unequivocally that our current system does not work for everyone in our community. It is time for a new system. It is past time.

People in a southern Iowa community are absolutely outraged after a dog that froze to death gets no justice.

According to KCCI, a dog in Iowa s Decatur County froze to death Monday after being left outside in bitter cold temperatures. The dog s owner told Decatur County deputies that his dog was an outside hunting dog and that he didn t think this would happen . The owner also told KCCI that the deputies told him that he would not face charges, since he was remorseful. As you can imagine, the Davis City community is now outraged.
