A drive-by shooting at a Fairfield park left one person dead and four others injured.
The gunfire erupted about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Glen Oaks Park, also known as Homer E. Hayes Soccer Complex. The small park in the 200 block of Glen Crest Drive in the Glen Oaks neighborhood.
Deputy Chief David Agee said deputies were dispatched to the park on a report of shots fired. When they arrived, they found five young men wounded. One of the victims was dead, but the severity of the injuries to the others has not yet been released. They were all taken to UAB Hospital’s Trauma Center.
Agee said investigators believe the men were in the park when somebody fired multiple shots at them from a car with “a high-powered weapon.”
“I believe this is going to be targeted,” Agee said. “It’s likely these individuals knew each other and had some type of dispute.”
He added that it was not immediately clear whether all of the shots were fired from the vehicle into the park or whether shots were also exchanged between the suspects and the victims.
No suspects were immediately announced and the investigation remained ongoing Wednesday.
