Berkley petting zoo permit denied; agricultural uses of farm allowed

Or is it? In April, neighbors of 11 Babbit Way were adamantly against owners Amindabe and Ledir Rodrigues s special permit request for a petting zoo that would also feature horseback rides and pony rides, animal feeding and assorted entertainment activities for children that may even include a water slide. Abutters complained such activities are already happening at the address, bringing with them noise and traffic that disrupts their neighborhood. After repeating their concerns as they filled the meeting room at town hall on June 16 for a meeting about the continuance of the special permit, the neighbors breathed a collective sigh of relief when selectmen voted to deny the Rodrigues s application. Town counsel Adam Costa said this means the Rodriqueses must now wait two years before reapplying for another such permit.

Berkley petting zoo: Babbitt Way neighbors speak out against proposal

BERKLEY A petting zoo with other children s entertainment activities may sound like a nice idea for a farm in a rural town like Berkley. But not to the many of its neighbors, who are adamantly against 11 Babbitt Way owner Ledir Rodriques s special permit request for a plan that would also feature pony and horseback rides and a water slide.  In fact, the neighbors complained to the selectmen at an April 28 hearing on the petting zoo proposal that such activities are already happening at the address, bringing with them noise and traffic that disrupts their neighborhood. Rodrigues s attorney Wayne Berube emphasized the petitioner is seeking relief to extend the hours of operation on his five-acre farm to limited times  and that he will accept visitors by invitation only and will be concerned about keeping tight security.
