Sussex County Council has taken a major step to get long-awaited road improvement projects completed ahead of Delaware Department of Transportation s anticipated schedule. A project not scheduled to begin for at least four years will now get underway in early 2021.
At its Dec. 15 meeting, council voted 4-1 to approve a memorandum of understanding with DelDOT to create the Funding Accelerating Safety in Transportation (FAST) Track funding program, a first-of-its-kind plan to use a set-aside of county funds to jump-start road improvements that are planned, but not imminent on DelDOT s six-year capital projects list.
Under the program, Sussex County will provide funding to expedite the construction of road projects in the county. DelDOT will then reimburse the county the total amount as a project is completed.

Developers can begin preliminary site-plan work
Milton Town Council unanimously approved two annexation requests. One of the approved parcels is this nearly 8-acre tract at the intersection of Route 16 and Union Street Extended that would be zoned C-1 commercial. The second annexation is for Milton Attainable Housing LLC to bring in a 26-acre parcel that would be used for a mixed commercial/residential development. Developer Preston Schell said a preliminary site plan should be submitted by February with an eye toward final site-plan approval at the end of 2021 or beginning of 2022.

It appears state transportation officials will not back up a statement to remove a crosswalk near a curve on Camp Arrowhead Road made in August by former Delaware Department of Transportation Secretary Jennifer Cohan.
According to C.R. McLeod, director of communications, DelDOT engineers have determined that the project would include more than removing striping on the roadway. “We’d have to remove the shared-use paths – constructed by the developer – on both sides of the road to prevent people from using the crossing, otherwise crossings would still be attempted,” he said.
McLeod said the developer will remove some trees that contribute to sight issues, and DelDOT will install rapid-flash beacons to warn approaching vehicles of the crosswalk.
