Efforts underway to expand affordable housing options
SOUTH KINGSTOWN â As housing prices continue to climb, the possibility of young professionals and young families being able to afford the costs of living in South Kingstown moves more and more outside the realm of reality.
Over the past several years, the South Kingstown Affordable Housing Collaborative Committee has been searching for creative and inventive ways to remedy this growing problem, and a solution may now be in the pipeline.Â
On Monday, the town council unanimously agreed to greenlight a property tax relief pilot program, which will hopefully incentivise private property owners to create new accessory dwelling units.Â
Council wants to investigate how student information was shared
SOUTH KINGSTOWN â Numerous community members raised concerns to the town council and the school committee this week over a mailer on the school facilities bond issue, which was addressed and sent out to many children in the district.Â
Some of the children who received these mailers were in kindergarten.
Many parents in the district have viewed this as a major breach of student privacy and are concerned that sharing this information with a third party has put their children in jeopardy.
Town Councilwoman Jess Rose made a special motion at Monday nightâs meeting to add this item to the agenda and at least open the matter up for discussion.Â
Dooley prepares to say goodbye to southern Rhode Island
KINGSTON â The Board of Trustees for the University of Rhode Island has officially named President David M. Dooleyâs replacement, though heâll still sit at the helm for another few months.Â
Last week, the board announced the selection of Professor Marc B. Parlange, provost and senior vice president of Monash University in Australia, as the universityâs next president. In August, heâll be taking the reins from Dooley â who for more than a decade has been a major driving force of development and transformation in Kingston.Â
âI just want to say, on a personal note, Iâve really enjoyed living here amongst all of you,â Dooley told members of the South Kingstown Town Council on Monday. âThe Town of South Kingstown has been a great place for us, as a family. Lynn and I have enjoyed a lot of what South County, and particularly South Kingstown, has to offer.âÂ
SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Plans for the school facilities project have been years in the making, though not everyone is convinced the town is moving in the right direction.
