Mental health initiative in Dauphin County helps keep people out of prison Before the initiative, people with mental illness were spending more time in prison compared to those without mental illness. In Dauphin County, the way officials are dealing with people with severe mental health illness has been nationally recognized. Through a program implemented over the last few years, they ve been able to significantly cut down on the amount of people being held in the county prison.  mental illness is not a crime, said Dauphin County Commissioner George Hartwick when speaking about the county s Stepping Up program.

Photo by Becky Metrick Facebook Share One person died in a shooting Tuesday night, according to Harrisburg police. Deputy Chief Dennis Sorensen said officers first responded to the 1400 block of Vernon Street around 8:45 p.m. A male, age not provided, died from the shooting, he said. As of 10:30 p.m., forensics investigators were still at the scene, and Sorensen said the Dauphin County District Attorney had been to the scene. He expected investigators to be on scene for another hour.
