Australian Open could be forced offshore18/05/2021|2min
Tennis Australia is pushing for international borders to be opened before mid-next year amid fears the Australian Open could be lost to a Middle Eastern country.
The organisation’s CEO Craig Tiley has quashed the fears and said the event will go ahead but there are concerns some of tennis’ biggest names will not want to undergo another two weeks of quarantine before the competition.
Players and their support staff can travel quite freely as part of a biosecurity bubble in other parts of the world and discussions are underway as to why something similar could not happen in Australia.

Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said he was prepared to climb Mount Everest again to keep the Grand Slam at Melbourne Park next year after a report said it might have to be moved.
State broadcaster ABC reported on Monday a government forecast that Australia s borders would be closed until mid-2022 could force the relocation of the tournament to Dubai or Doha as players would not be prepared to undergo quarantine again.
Tiley, who oversaw the strict 14-day quarantine of players and officials to get this year s Australian Open played against huge odds, said there were no plans to relocate the 2022 tournament.

Tennis Australia boss Craig Tiley says next year s Australian Open will be played in Melbourne, amid reports the tournament could be moved overseas.
The ABC says the prediction that Australia s borders will remain shut until mid-2022, along with an unwillingness from players to serve two weeks quarantine upon arrival, could make it impossible to host the tournament at Melbourne Park.
It notes that players are in bubbles during regular ATP and WTA events, allowing them to train and play without needing to spend time in quarantine.
Doha and Dubai, which this year hosted qualifying for the Australian Open, are named as potential venues should the event be moved.
