Sails Up, Lakers! Detroit Lakes students design multiple sailboats for public art project
When the 150 Sails Up in DL public art project was unveiled for the first time this past Friday, April 30, more than a half-dozen of them were revealed to have been created by past and present students of Detroit Lakes Public Schools. Six of the sailboat sculptures will be installed at the school district s four academic buildings, administration building and Lincoln Education Center, while another is going to the DLHS football field, Mollberg Field.

Detroit Lakes High School gets high marks from U.S. News and World Report
The school has been named a 2021 Best High School, ranking 32nd in the state of Minnesota and 2,114th in the nation, out of more than 17,800 public high schools. 4:40 pm, Apr. 28, 2021 ×
Detroit Lakes High School has the opportunity to hang another Best High School plaque on its wall, after earning the title again in U.S. News and World Report s 2021 school rankings. This plaque, made after the school was ranked 49th in Minnesota in 2018, hangs in the school office today. This year, the school is ranked 32nd in the state. (Marie Johnson / Tribune)
Detroit Lakes native, Air Force veteran designs sailboat for 150 Sails Up
Artist Brian Mahoney grew up in Detroit Lakes, so even though he now makes his home in Rapid City, S.D., it wasn t so surprising that he was asked to participate in the 150 Sails Up in DL public art project.
