Retail Sails offer public a chance to own a piece of Detroit Lakes history
Though the 150 Sails Up in DL public art project has been completed, there are still about a dozen sailboat sculptures available for purchase, either directly at the Detroit Lakes Sesquicentennial website, or via public auction at events scheduled later this year.

These two small sailboats were offered for sale via silent auction at the Sailboat Regatta Party on Friday, April 30. Proceeds from the Sails Up Detroit Lakes sculpture (at left) by Ava Marchus went to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Detroit Lakes. Bids for Spinner Blade Parade (at right) did not meet the reserve price, so the sculpture will be sold as one of the city s Retail Sails, with proceeds to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Sails Up, Lakers! Detroit Lakes students design multiple sailboats for public art project
When the 150 Sails Up in DL public art project was unveiled for the first time this past Friday, April 30, more than a half-dozen of them were revealed to have been created by past and present students of Detroit Lakes Public Schools. Six of the sailboat sculptures will be installed at the school district s four academic buildings, administration building and Lincoln Education Center, while another is going to the DLHS football field, Mollberg Field.

Sailboat Regatta Party draws a (socially distanced) crowd, check out our video walkthrough
They may have been socially distanced due to state-imposed pandemic safety requirements, but area residents still came out in large numbers for Friday night s Sailboat Regatta Party at Detroit Lakes Kent Freeman Arena. So what was all the excitement about? Inside the arena, a total of 150 three-dimensional sailboat sculptures half of them four feet in height, the other half just 20 inches tall were on display, for the first and only time that all of the 150 Sails Up in DL public art creations could be found in one place.
