United Way donates $250K to help build Detroit a community center

United Way of the Mid-Valley is awarding a $250,000 grant to the Detroit Lake Foundation to provide funds to build a community center. Detroit s city hall was destroyed in the Lionshead Fire in September. The community center will be built at 345 Santiam Avenue, the site of the former Detroit High School. The school was demolished 10 years ago, but the gym is still standing and will be incorporated into the design. “This gift is part of a transformational effort to rebuild our beloved city that will be loved by generations to come,” Detroit Lake Foundation president Chris Tardiff said in a statement.

(KTVZ) The Santiam Rebuild Coalition announced this week that it has secured property for a new community building in fire-stricken Detroit. Detroit Lake Foundation President Chris Tardiff signed the papers Wednesday, acquiring 345 Santiam Avenue in Detroit.  Somewhat miraculously, one large piece of land was left virtually untouched by the recent wildfires. The coalition shared its vision to restore Detroit with the property owner, Kim Fowler, who then donated a large portion of the two-acre parcel to the project. The property was formerly the site of Detroit High School. The school building was demolished a few years ago, yet the gymnasium is still standing. Rebuild plans include using the existing structure.
